How we do it
What’s included
Every job is quoted to your property. This is what a typical hardscapes job covers, start to finish.
Layout and plan
We mark the footprint, check grades and drainage, and agree on block, paver and edge choices.
Excavation and base
Dig to depth, then lay and compact processed gravel in lifts. The base decides how long a patio stays flat.
Walls, pavers and caps
Block walls set level with drainage stone behind, pavers laid to pattern, caps glued down.
Joints and edges
Edge restraint along the borders and joint sand swept in to lock the surface.
Cleanup
Spoils hauled, grade dressed with loam, and the site left clean.

Hardscapes questions
Under the Massachusetts building code, a retaining wall over 4 feet tall (measured from the bottom of the footing) generally needs a building permit, and taller walls often need an engineered design. Walls holding back a driveway or slope can need one even when shorter. We check with your town building department before we start.
Frost. Water in a thin or poorly compacted base freezes, expands and pushes pavers up. A deeper, compacted gravel base with good drainage is what keeps a patio flat through a Massachusetts winter.
Massachusetts law requires whoever is digging to notify Dig Safe (dial 811) at least 72 hours before excavating, not counting weekends and holidays. On our jobs, we make that call.
